Tips for including a dog at your wedding

Everyone’s Best Friend

We have two cats and two dogs, and they are a huge, huge, huge part of our lives. In fact, both of our pups are sat behind me in the office right now and I just gave them my last cocktail sausages from lunch. Anyway, my point is - that if you’re dog owners yourselves then they’re probably super important to you… and you might want to involve them in your wedding day celebrations somehow!

We’ve seen a few dogs at weddings recently and always love having them around, but there’s a few things you need to think about before just letting them off the lead and allowing them to go crazy around all your guests.

In this blog post, we'll explore some valuable tips for incorporating dogs into weddings, making it a day that everyone can enjoy - whether they have two or four legs!

1. Venue Compatibility

Hopefully this one is kinda obvious… but before bringing your dog to your wedding, you need to confirm that your chosen venue is pet-friendly. Some venues may have restrictions on pets due to space limitations or potential disruptions. Reach out to the venue management and discuss your plans, ensuring they are aware that your furry friend will be part of the celebration. If the venue doesn't allow pets, consider looking for alternative pet-friendly locations to make your dream of a dog-inclusive wedding come true.

2. Dog-Friendly Attire

Just like the couple and guests, your dog should look their best on this special day. Depending on your dog's temperament and comfort, you can dress them up in a cute bowtie, a floral collar, or a tiny tuxedo. Ensure the attire is comfortable and doesn't cause any distress to your canine companion. It's a good idea to have a practice run with the outfit beforehand to let your dog get used to it.

3. Assign a Responsible Handler

On the wedding day, you'll be busy with various responsibilities, so it's vital to assign a trusted friend or family member as your dog's handler. This person should be someone your dog knows well and feels comfortable with, as it will be their responsibility to manage and take care of the dog during the event. This handler can keep an eye on your dog, provide necessary breaks and walks, and ensure they have access to water and food if needed.

4. Practice and Training

Look, I’m not a dog training guru… and and if they’re anything like ours, this will probably be the hardest part, but well worthwhile for not just the wedding day, but life in general.

if you have time before the wedding, practice having your dog in the wedding setting, especially if they are not accustomed to crowds or new environments. Gradually expose them to similar scenarios, like a mock ceremony or gathering with friends and family, to help them feel more comfortable on the big day. Basic obedience training is crucial, and the dog should be well-versed in commands like "sit," "stay," and "come." A well-trained dog is more likely to be at ease and follow instructions on the big day.

5. Wedding Timeline Considerations

Include your dog in the wedding timeline, but remember to be mindful of their needs and limitations. Dogs, especially younger ones, can tire easily or become overwhelmed by the festivities. Plan specific slots for your dog's appearances during the ceremony, photo sessions, and perhaps a short appearance at the reception. This way, they can be part of the celebration without feeling stressed or fatigued.

6. Pet-Friendly Amenities

Ensure the wedding venue has pet-friendly amenities, such as a designated potty area, fresh water, and a quiet space for them to rest if necessary. Keep in mind that your dog may need some downtime away from the excitement, so having a comfortable space for them to retreat to can make a significant difference.
